Governance update: Strengthening leadership development and oversight

By CREB®
Strong governance helps ensure CREB® continues to make thoughtful, strategic decisions on behalf of members. CREB®’s Governance Manual is posted on the Governance Excellence tab on CREB®Link and it explains our governance framework; which involves people, processes and the structures that establish how that is to occur.

At its June 17 meeting, the board of directors approved updates to CREB®’s Governance Manual to strengthen leadership development, enhance oversight and support long-term organizational readiness.

In particular, the focus is on maintaining qualified and capable directors: individuals that possess the requisite skills, experience, capacity and aptitude to fulfill the expectations of the important role they occupy.

Over the past several years, the CREB® Board of Directors has evolved their oversight of director training and skill growth with the creation of a sub-committee of the board; the Director Development Advisory Group (DDAG). These updates to policy transition the DDAG into the new Leadership Success Advisory Group (LSAG).

It was through our investment in director development continuous improvements that these improvements were studied and can be implemented. The updated structure follows the model of other organizations by creating something similar to a human resources committee of the board that is focused strictly on the board of directors and their one employee, the President & CEO.

This change brings director development and President & CEO oversight into one integrated structure, creating a more coordinated approach to leadership planning, development and accountability.

Under this updated structure, the Board will be better positioned to:

Align leadership development with CREB®’s strategic priorities
Strengthen President & CEO oversight, including performance, professional development, and succession planning
Enhance director onboarding, training and ongoing development

According to CREB® Chair-Elect Matt McBean, who serves as chair of LSAG:

“Together, these updates reflect governance best practices and support a more consistent approach to leadership development, planning and oversight. We already have robust performance, development and succession planning process in place with our President & CEO, but this change makes more efficient use of our resources.”

Related policy updates will continue as this work progresses to ensure CREB®’s governance documents remain aligned with the new LSAG structure. These updates will help keep responsibilities, processes and decision-making practices clear, current and consistent, while supporting transparency and accountability on behalf of members.

As Chair-Elect McBean summarizes; “our 2025 Annual Report to members included two full pages of reporting on our investment in director development; an important recap of our commitment to this dimension of good governance”.
