According to screenshots provided to CREB®, this individual has reached out to numerous female agents under the pretense of being a buyer. In each reported instance, the agents experienced behaviour they described as inappropriate.
While incidents of this nature are uncommon, they serve as an important reminder of the need for ongoing vigilance when interacting with unfamiliar individuals — whether online or in person.
Members are encouraged to report any behaviour they believe may be inappropriate, threatening or criminal directly to their broker and local police. Reporting concerns supports individual safety and helps prevent others from being targeted.
CREB® recognizes that maintaining a strong online presence is essential in today’s real estate environment. At the same time, members are encouraged to use caution, verify identities and set clear boundaries when engaging with new or unknown contacts.
When connecting with new clients
• If you receive inappropriate calls or messages, block the number immediately and contact your service provider if needed.
• Verify the identity of new clients before meeting or scheduling appointments.
• For virtual meetings, consider enabling automatic recording and advising participants accordingly.
• When meeting in person, choose public locations when possible and ensure someone is aware of your whereabouts.
When attending or hosting showings and open houses
• Trust your instincts. If something doesn’t feel right, remove yourself from the situation.
• Have a safety plan in place and know how to exit an uncomfortable or unsafe interaction.
• Follow safety protocols established by your brokerage and industry best practices.
Supporting a safe work environment
• Maintain professional boundaries with clients and contacts.
• Be familiar with your brokerage’s respectful workplace and safety policies.
• Prioritize both physical and psychological safety in your work environment.
CREB® encourages members to remain alert, support one another and take appropriate steps to protect their safety while conducting business.
