The Public Director plays an important role in supporting strong governance and informed decision-making by bringing an independent, external perspective to the board.

About the role

The Public Director is accountable to the board of directors and to CREB® members, with key contributions in the areas of strategic oversight, risk management and organizational sustainability. The role requires a strong understanding of governance principles and the ability to contribute thoughtfully to board discussions and decision-making.

Key areas of focus include:

government relations and civic engagement
governance, legal, legislative or regulatory experience
strategic thinking and risk oversight
communications, public relations, listening and facilitation skills
experience advancing professional standards
performance oversight and risk management

At CREB®, the Public Director is an ambassador for CREB® and supports the board in upholding the organization’s mission, vision and values, alongside the wider team of directors.

Term and eligibility

Under CREB® Bylaws, a Public Director is appointed for a one-year term, with the option to serve a second consecutive year, to a maximum of two years.

To be eligible, a Public Director candidate must:

be a non-member of CREB®
not have been a CREB® member within the past five years
meet the qualifications and skills identified by the Board Development and Leadership Standing Committee (BDLSC)

Appointment process

Following the annual board of directors election in November, newly elected and returning directors update their CREB® volunteer profiles. This information is used to complete a skills inventory and gap assessment for the incoming board.

Based on this assessment, the BDLSC identifies the desired skills profile and oversees the recruitment of a Public Director. Applications are evaluated against this profile and shortlisted candidates are interviewed by at least three members of the BDLSC. A summary report is then provided to the committee for consideration.

The appointment decision is intended to be made by the BDLSC by the end of the first quarter of the year.
