Council approves repeal of blanket rezoning

By CREB®

Calgary City Council has approved bylaw amendments to repeal blanket rezoning and restore land use districts and property designations to their pre-2024 state.

The changes reverse the citywide residential rezoning that came into effect in August 2024 and will take effect on Aug. 4, 2026, allowing time for system updates and application intake.

Certain properties will be exempt, including those with approved or in-progress development, building permit or subdivision applications.

CREB®’s advocacy efforts

CREB® advocated for the repeal of blanket rezoning, reflecting feedback from members brought forward by the Government Relations Standing Committee (GRSC) and approved by the Board of Directors.

As part of these efforts, CREB® met with policy analysts from the Office of the Mayor, hosted two meetings with councillors in advance of the public hearing, collaborated with a community coalition of planning and development experts and community association leaders, and presented at the hearing to ensure the voice of members was represented.

Members of the GRSC also wrote to their city councillors to advocate on CREB®’s position. This work is foundational to the committee’s scope of responsibility and to deepening our relationship with local elected officials.
