While rare, these kinds of incidents are a reminder of the real risks REALTORS® face while doing their jobs, especially when working alone or interacting with unknown individuals.
We encourage members to report all criminal conduct to the police or RCMP—doing so not only ensures the safety of our community but also helps deter perpetrators from targeting others.
We understand that having a strong online presence is essential in today’s real estate landscape. However, it’s critical to remain cautious and set boundaries when engaging with new or unfamiliar contacts, whether virtually or in person.
Here are some important safety practices to keep top of mind:
When connecting with new clients:
- If you receive inappropriate calls or messages, block the number immediately. Contact your service provider if you need assistance.
- Verify the identity of all new clients before meeting.
- If meeting virtually, set up the meeting to record automatically, and advise the new client of such.
- Meet in a public space when possible and consider bringing a colleague or friend.
When attending or hosting showings and open houses:
- Trust your instincts—if something doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t.
- Create a safety plan and know how to remove yourself from an uncomfortable or unsafe situation.
- Follow safety tips established by your brokerage and industry professionals.
Fostering a safe work environment:
- Maintain clear boundaries with clients and colleagues.
- Understand your brokerage’s respectful workplace policies and prioritize psychological safety.
- Ensure your work environment reflects your values and provides you with the support you need.
