Joining forces on National Housing Day to promote affordable homes and strong communities

By CREB®
National Housing Day is a day dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of safe, affordable, and adequate housing for all Canadians.

The day provides an opportunity to reflect on the current state of housing in the country, recognize the progress that has been made, and address the challenges that still exist.

REALTORS® play a major role in helping Canadians find their safe and secure homes. Whether it is through the buying and selling process, or through volunteerism for housing and shelter needs, they are always ready to support their communities.

My parents always volunteered, and we were ‘voluntold’ to get out and help,” said David Frid, CREB® REALTOR® of the Year 2022. “It was a way to gain life skills that you wouldn’t normally get unless you were employed. More recently, with that drive to volunteer and flipping the script, I feel I have skills that organizations can use but don't often have the resources to pay for.”

Various events and activities are organized on National Housing Day to engage communities, share information, and discuss strategies to address housing issues. The day serves as a platform to advocate for policies and initiatives that aim to improve housing affordability, reduce homelessness, and create inclusive and sustainable communities.

The CREB® REALTOR® Community Foundation works to make a difference in housing and shelter solutions in the Calgary community through fundraising, grants and volunteering. The foundation builds relationships with local charities for REALTORS® to participate in volunteer opportunities and give back to the communities they serve.

Giving back to CREB® and to the community is important to me,” said Valerie Konechny, CREB® Volunteer of the Year 2022. “It not only gives me the opportunity to connect with other CREB® members, but that I feel that I can make a difference in our community.”

Keep an eye on CREB®Talk for volunteer opportunities with organizations such as Ronald McDonald House Alberta, Inn from the Cold and Habitat for Humanity.
